Ministry |
||
| "Music
is integral to the liturgy. It unifies those gathered to worship, supports the song of the congregation, highlights significant parts of the liturgical action, and helps to set the tone for each celebration." (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Built of Living Stones, November 16, 2000) |

|
Involvement
in any ministry is a calling from the Lord. |
||
|
Our music ministry is not just a group of people who sing together, but
Christians joining their voices with musical instruments to worship and
praise the Lord. One way we express our
love of God is through music. Our ministry is not to show off our
musical virtuosity, but to show God’s love for the world THROUGH
music. Our ministry members are truly dedicated to making the liturgical
music a prayerful and uplifting worship experience. We serve our parish
community by encouraging and assisting the assembly to sing. |

An
extra blessing we receive is the sense of community and fellowship we
feel with one another. In a very real sense, we are called to be loving
witnesses of God’s love and grace, a listening ear, someone with whom
to laugh and cry and people who pray and sing with one another. Laughter, joy, and a sense of community are the many blessings that come from serving the Lord in the music ministry. Prayerfully consider being involved in this ministry. If you are interested in joining our Music Ministry as a vocalist or instrumentalist, the most important requirement is a LOVE of MUSIC and WILLINGNESS to SERVE. |

The Voices of Light Choir is in need of new (or former) members. |
||
|
Positions
are open in soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. Requirements/Qualifications:
The Voice of Light Choir is open to all parishioners and there is no
audition to join. Ages range from high school to retirees. The
choir is a wonderful blend of ages and voice types. We welcome and want
more members. Parishioners can join at any point during the year. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the church from mid-September through the end of May. The choir sings at the 10:30 Mass every Sunday and every Holy Day Vigil Mass between mid-September and the first week of June. Joining the choir is a definite commitment and is not a "drop-in" type activity. However, our choir members have families, jobs, travel obligations, etc... As a result, many choir members have sporadic conflicts with both the Thursday rehearsal as well as our Sunday 10:30 Mass. Choir members are simply asked to let the Music Director know about absences as far in advance as possible, understanding that sometimes unanticipated conflicts arise at the last minute. |

Cantors or Song Leaders |
||
|
Cantors
or Song Leaders are a vital part of our music ministry. It is the
cantor’s responsibility to welcome the congregation to Mass, announce
the songs, lead the songs or hymns during the liturgy while encouraging
the congregation to participate in sung prayer. Requirements/Qualifications: The cantor program welcomes new members at any time during the year. An audition is required. Cantors should ideally be studying voice privately, (although this is not required), or have significant choral experience. Cantors must be able to read music. Cantors must be practicing Catholics who are either registered parishioners at Our Lady of Light or an active member of the Our Lady of Light Music Ministry. Cantors rehearse with the Music Director individually once each month for 45 minutes depending on the repertoire which needs to be covered. These individual rehearsals are scheduled based on the cantor's personal schedule. So, a time is chosen that is convenient for you. Cantors must come to their individual rehearsals with music fully prepared. The purpose of the rehearsal is to work on vocal technique, interpretation and phrasing... not to teach notes. Please contact Billie Jean Mounts at (239) 267-7088 ext. 235 or at music@ourladyoflight.com if you would like to schedule an audition. Cantors are assigned on a rotating schedule. |

Instrumentalists |
||
|
Those
blessed with the gift of being able to play an instrument are WELCOME to
share their talents with our parish community. Membership (guitar,
drums, piano, flute, oboe, string instruments, etc.) is open to men and
women of high school age and older who can read music. Placement is
contingent upon need. Requirements/Qualifications: Musically trained and ability to read music and transpose if necessary, and be comfortable playing independently in front of a large congregation. An audition will help determine where gifts can be best used at Our Lady of Light. |
