CONFIRMATION
– NOW THAT’S A FIRE!
“When
the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, They were all in one place together.
And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind,
and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there
appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each
one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began
to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.”
– Acts 2:1-4
The
dictionary defines confirmation as an act of ratifying or establishing.
This is the cool thing about the Sacrament of Confirmation. It’s
no longer your parent’s church that you attend. It’s your
church! In this Sacrament you get the chance to confirm to the whole
church all of your beliefs. You are an adult in the church and you
become more fully initiated. This chance to ratify your faith
publicly completes Baptism, because at Baptism you couldn’t speak for
yourself. Now you can.
Confirmation
establishes your faith because through the sacrament, God works in your
soul in a very deliberate and radical way. You receive the Holy
Spirit more fully and God gives you all you need to evangelize to others
the Good News of His Son Jesus Christ.
In
the Bible at the first Confirmation, (Acts 2:1-4), when the Apostles
received the Holy Spirit, the desire to talk about Christ burned in their
hearts and they could not keep quiet. It was just too good to keep
to themselves. Have you ever had something that was so exciting that
your heart burned and you had to tell people? This is how the
Apostles felt. You receive this exact same Spirit at Confirmation.
Just
as the descent of the Holy Spirit was a new beginning for Christ’s
apostles, so it is for each of you. The Holy Spirit transforms you
and makes you more like Jesus. You will choose a new name after a
Saint who will prayer for you in heaven. How cool is it to know that
there is a special Saint praying for you! God puts a special make on
your soul which will never be erased. In fact, when you get to
heaven, it will still be there. You are fully a new person in Christ
and God has claimed you as His own.
As
you enter into this sacrament, pray for the grace to truly live your
faith, to establish a closer bond with God, and to be set on fire for
Christ.
